Too many news outlets (as well as sports stations) have their agendas stacked, and we don't question the message. Strong community stations like WHUR and WAMU in Washingon and Radio-One, who covers large amounts of the country have to offer more of a voice and offer nonbiased reports. It's not only their duty however, it's our job too. Don't just read one paper, watch one television network or listen to a single radio source. I am not sure if this project will ever make it to wide release, but it's a great find for fans of the 80's band. If you remember, Jesse had success with "Be Your Man" and to a lesser extent "Can You Help Me" and "I Want My Girl". It seemed that his future as a solo artist would be solidified but, for some reason, the solo thing never clicked for Jesse Johnson unlike his band mates, Morris Day and the production mega-team of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Verbal Penetration features the single "UandIRWeRUs", which almost has a Curtis Mayfield feel to it. UandIRWeRUs, is full-bodied and nicely layered. Although the title is strange, there is a message in the words, putting thought into the lyrical content. The unfortunate thing is that without a hot name or big label this hidden gem will most likely be swallowed up in the sea of Christmas Music and the holiday push of higher grossing artists.

If you are a fan of great guitar work, decent vocals and a cool little groove, you'll want to check UandIRWeRUs out for your digital archives. The first single features George Duke and is called "Let's Ride." There is also a cut featuring George Clinton and another song with the late Ali Woodson (of the Temptation's fame) on lead vocals. My jam on the record though, is buried deep in the CD, in fact it's the last cut, and it is called "Wayman's Gotta Do It!" Gotta Do It, features a funk-box vocal and I promise you it will make the stiffest necks wobble! Kirk Whalum has taken his craft in many directions. He's done jazz both straight-ahead and smooth, gospel and now he has taken the Donny Hathaway songbook and made it a mainly instrumental masterpiece! The album is entitled "Everything Is Everything" (a saying that Donny made popular way before Lauryn Hill or Michael Baisden). The back story to the making of this album is powerful. This work was much more than selecting a iconic artist and replicating his music. If you get a chance listen to the reason why!
I stopped by the sold-out Birchmere Concert Hall in Alexandria, Virginia and took in Eric Benet's show. Eric was in rare voice, clearer and stronger than I've heard him in some time. By the reaction of the packed house I think that Mr. Benet is back on top as one of the leading male vocalists in adult urban music of this generation. Eric did a few songs from his new album "Lost In Time" and the feedback was very positive. The new album will arrive in early November. "Lost In Time" is an album that was done in the fashion of recordings from the early eighties, right down to the recording process which gives the songs a warmth that is missing in most music today. Make sure you pay close attention to the Birchmere's concert calendar for the upcoming months. You will notice that there are a lot of great shows coming to the area via the Birchmere booking agency including Najee, Gerald Albright and my man Citizen Cope (If you don't know about him, ask somebody that's cool!)

I had a wild dream the other night, the legendary Donnie Simpson and I were hanging out since neither of us are in radio right now. We talked about when we get back into the game, we chipped some golf balls in my backyard (I did say this was a dream right?) All while we listened to some new music that I downloaded (the music if for real). We listened to a couple of interesting remakes. There was the Burt Bacharach classic "Close To You" by Ron Isley singing the duet with Ms. Lauryn Hill from Ron's soon to be released album "Mr. I" on Def Jam Records. When I first listened to this I liked it for the arrangement but the vocals are an acquired taste. I mean, it's good to hear Lauryn's distinctive voice after such a long layoff. Ron Isley's voice is starting to show its age. In my opinion this is for the very mature audience and lovers of classic ballads only. You might have to hunt around for this one on radio unless you can catch it on a show like "The Original Quiet Storm" with Jeff Brown.

Our Godfather, yes all of us have the same one, Chuck Brown dropped a taste of real DC Go-Go love on us with the help of Jill Scott. It's the first release from his new 3-Disc album called "We Got This." The song is called "Love" and it is that and more! Chuck blessed us with an outdoor "free" concert in downtown Washington, DC on friday September 24th right on Pennsylvania Avenue not too far from the Obama's. Chuck kicked... WIND ME UP, CHUCK!!! Oh, excuse me but the 75 year old did his thing performing "Love" and a whole lot more. Get ready for "We Got This" which includes one studio recorded disc and two discs of the "Godfather of Go-Go's" live performance.

Pro and college football season is off and running, the NBA camps are getting ready to open and the weather is just right for taking in a local soccer match. Tailgating is a blast at NFL games but there have been polls taken lately which show that people would rather watch football on television but basketball, especially in two of my favorite cities New York and Washington, is more of a social event. I love being at the Washington Wizards games and even when the team wasn't so good, there was championship Washingtonian watching in the hallways and every other section of the Verizon Center. This year might be rough though with John Wall on the floor and the parade of interesting people in the concourse's. What's a man to do? I plan to attend as many games as I can because I have a feeling Chinatown will be the place to be this winter. It will be even better when the team gets out of those ugly uniforms and back into the Red, White and Blue of the glory days of the Washington Bullets in 2011 (no official pictures yet).

I hate to end on a sad note this week, but I couldn't go without paying tribute to one of the people who first accepted me when I came to the DC area. Initially Wendell was just a big quiet guy with shaded glasses that would shake my hand and give me a compliment at concerts. Later I found out that he was Wendell Williamson a former announcer and Producer at WHUR. It wasn't until his passing this week that I found out this guy was more than just a radio man but a musician (sort of like my own story.) But, Wendell and his band went a lot further than my musical journey. He persuaded LA Reid of then LaFace Productions to give the band a look. They also were finalists on "Natalie Cole's Big Break", an America's Got Talent type of television show during the late 80's that featured then unknowns like and R. Kelly & MGM (the predecessor to R. Kelly & Public Announcement) and a band who knocked out Wendell's group featuring a brother and sister who named the group after the brothers middle name "Benet", yup, Lisa Jordan and her younger brother Eric Benet Jordan. So, I found out that the quiet big man in the shades was a pretty deep brother and he'll be missed by many.
KNOWWAXhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13486869725435140806noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5935951470357628023.post-52795412194668937012010-09-09T16:41:00.002-04:002010-09-10T14:26:19.683-04:00YOU CAN'T WEAR WHITE UNTIL NEXT SPRING!I am sure the people I write about this week were told that "You Can't Do" whatever it is that they do! I found myself going underground, you know, below the radar where I could put on the same white clothes for seven days and no one would know that I repeated my wardrobe.

I started at the legendary Blues Alley in the heart of Georgetown. There was a show produced by an artist I had never heard of named Lala Hidatha. Lala and her band of 9 filled the small venue on a Wednesday night for the 8 and 10pm shows. Hidatha, a Washington native, started a little slow vocally, singing a couple of cover tunes. I wasn't sure if it was a bad case of the "pre-show jitters" or just the perils of an 8 o'clock show. She picked it up in a hurry when she did her own music. Lala slowed down the tempo and interacted with the audience, filled with a lot of family and friends. The band was tight and her background singers sounded good as a unit, the strongest being the male singer. Her style is what I like to call "Modern or 21st Century Blues" which puts you in the mind of Vivian Green, except Lala's strong alto voice has more resonance. She belted out a few songs that the room grooved to. The song that stuck with me was an original entitled "This Is Me," a sort of reggae rocker from her album "My Thoughts, Vol. 1" which she did sell after the show.

I had a chance to talk to here after her set, since I have never heard of her before and couldn't find her on CD Baby or any of the other music websites. I needed to know more about this mysterious artist because after all, I am KNOWWAX! I introduced myself to her mother who, in turn, introduced me to her husband (the bands guitar player and Musical Director) who led me upstairs. Ms. Hidatha was all smiles as she got ready for the next show. She filled me in that she got her "Lala" nickname at an early age following behind her mother singing. You see, she's the daughter of a mother who sang for some time with the Adam Cole Gospel Singers and Lala herself puts in work at the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church of DC, singing in their choir. So you won't find her on any of the local radio stations playlists (and maybe you never will). There aren't pictures or music of hers on the internet sites where you usually pick up your music, but you might catch Lala Hidatha cutting her teeth in spots like Blues Alley.

_____________________________________________________________________

Brasserie Beck isn't the newest restaurant to bless the District but it seems to be a secret to some of my peers, cousins, brothers and sisters but it shouldn't be. Besides, the French-Belgian cuisine is interesting and better than you will find at the DC hotspot Marvin's. Brasserie Beck has a bartender who knows his liquor too and he takes it very seriously. He was quick to point out to me that he put the drink menu together which was pretty exotic. After I gave him a compliment on his menu he let me sample some ginger vodka and a few other odd concoctions. If you are looking for a spot to hit late night, especially Thursday's through Saturday from 10:30 until closing during their late Happy Hours (you can get half-priced oysters and drafts), may I suggest Brasserie Beck. My stop at Beck's was short but enough time to take in a brew and some oysters. Then I promised myself that I would comeback with a few friends to make some noise and start my own party. It could be good for my (and your) lifestyle.
Yes, the white suit was still, for the most part, looking fresh and I didn't see anybody that saw me wearing it earlier in the week. The house warming was for a dear friend of mine. She put her own line up together including me on the MacBook Pro (where all the music is stored) and a spoken word artist Cherrie Amour. She's a fiery Caribbean-Canadian Princess who came to the Baltimore area to work at a History and Culture museum. We all gathered in the homes den where Ms. Amour did selections from her debut CD. I will tell you, I did hear the debut work before and didn't care for it much. When she performed "Live" the pieces took on a new lives! I guess there are some artists that give better performances than the recordings and vise-versa (sorry Mariah). Cherrie has a new, yet to be named CD of "Spoken Songs" that is due out before the end of the year. The recordings sound much better than her first work so I am eager to hear her perform them on stage. Now, there are a couple of songs that have a little too much reverb added, but I was listening to an un-mastered demo. The cuts that got my attention were "I Love How I Look" and uptempo, uplifting song for women everywhere and "Love Came Rushing In" which almost sounds like poetry added to a House Music Track; it is infectious. Check her out on CD Baby and Facebook or just look for the name Cherrie Amour showing up on a website in your house soon...
"Intimacy" Album III is nothing new to most of the women I've polled they all had already downloaded it and play it several times a day. So, this review is for my brothers... if you know or like a lady, you'd better catch up and keep Kem in your rotation. The album starts with two mid-tempo burners that could go into any progressive radio stations playlist (but probably won't until they are made singles). "When I'm Loving You" and "Can You Feel It" set up the sexy, mature nature of the Nashville born, Detroit raised Kem Owen's coolness. Kem doesn't go right after the love jugular until the third song "Love Never Fails" where the ex-wedding band singer takes his time and dishes lyrics and a little talking (Question ladies; How do those little guys have those deep voices?) that bleeds right into "Share My Life", the latest single currently heard on radio. I could go through each song on this CD because they are ALL good and the way it is sequenced the songs flow right from one to another. I do want to point out another hidden gem called "A Mother's Love." How can this song fail? It starts slow and dreamy with just some light piano then halfway through picks up with the whole band joining in. It's perfect for anyone who has fond memories of their mother, surely to become a heavy play around Mother's Day!
Anita comes to town about as often as Leap Year so when she does make an appearance it is special and this one was no different. In the beginning she belted out "Sweet Love" which still sounds so great even though you can't understand all the words to the song, it's nothing different than when she performed it twenty-four years ago. I went ready to count the number of times Anita would stop and complain about the sound system but, even though it sounded pretty tinny to my ears, she kept on singing only to give slight directions during her 90 minute set. Her voice, still smokey and sexy was accompanied by a six piece band (with old friend Gerald Albright on sax) and three background singers. You could tell that as much as we missed her, Anita Baker missed us, as she did a good portion of the set with the house lights up so she could take in the crowd. Speaking of the crowd, they were as energetic to the music as Anita was playful with them and by the time she performed "Same Ol' Love," everybody was out of their seats swaying to the music. She also graced us with a song from her upcoming album titled "21st Century Love" do out either later this year or early 2011.
Fantasia's voice is so strong in her studio recording and she backs it when I've seen her live in a few showcases and in The Color Purple where she didn't disappoint and by the way one of her moving songs from the play "I'm Here" co-written by the legendary Brenda Russell, closes out this album. Collard Greens & Cornbread borrows Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell's "Your Precious Love" track and adds some modern woman's situation to music. It's about at this song where the album wakes up. A reggae tinged song called "Teach Me" the young love tale "Trust Him" and a funky thing called "The Thrill Is Gone" (not a remake of B.B. There are some good songs on this album but you will have to jump around to find them. Here's a cool place for a segue and more on Fantasia!

Saturday at the Hoodies started with a fashion show featuring a new line of designer jeans by the before mentioned Thomas Miles (Nephew Tommy). Tommy filled the hall with over 1,000 Thick Chicks that were all trying to get nephews attention. Tommy's favorite phrase is that he like them "16 and Up with a Short Hair Cut and a Whole Lot of Butt"! The jeans were average to good but the big models were workin' their big back pockets! That evening was the Awards Show which rivals any award program you can imagine. There were musical performances by The O'Jay's, Angie Stone and Fantasia. The performances were all good but pretty long which helped to stretch the show to five hours! If this is ever to make it to television the only thing needing correction would be the length. I had great floor seats but gave them up to stay in the media room which turned into the celeberty lounge after they left the stage. There was a lot of mingling and picture taking going on. My favorite was LisaRaye showing off her beautiful ASSet and Omerosa giving us all a thrill with her hot orange gown and pretty smilie!... Oh yeah, let me remember my Pastor John K. DC (and my former employer WHUR) brought home 4 Hoodies in all. Best Church, Best Teacher, Best Fried Chicken and Best Nail Salon. As Steve said "If DC didn't lose, somebody was gonna start kicking some ass!" We did win three straight to jump-start the awards!
Any woman who has gotten bumped for a model upgrade will relate to this gem and any of us dudes who has lost a woman to a celebrity type guy will remember that pain. Comments like "I like this. Everyone has felt like this a time or 2" "Ouch" and "I love the way in one verse she admits she is bitter, lmao" are some of the best descriptions of the single which is in "set-up" mode on your local radio stations. Ambrosius technical work is still as sharp as when she was one half of Floetry. In listening to a live version of the song Marsha's voice is even more captivating than the recording! Musically, the piano and bass lines are simple but powerful. I think, like one fan put it "It grows on you!"
Warner Brother Records put on the showcase and the only unfortunate thing is that a major city like Washington, DC doesn't have better venues to serve up showcases with this potential. Most of the faces in the crowd were new to me. No DC or Baltimore radio, No retailers (are there any left?), and just one other blogger, one concert promoter and one Independent record promoter. My big question; Is the DC music scene that dead or does the industry not like Lyfe?

When Jenning's and his crew hit the stage the crowd was buzzing. The house, predominantly full of ladies, were kept waiting just long enough for a good swell of anticipation. The room also didn't mind that Lyfe Jennings talked a lot between each song he sang. The group of peers around me pointed out that the hard sounding singer's wardrobe didn't match his strong voice... Oh, what was he wearing? Some white Capri Shorts... I know it was a warm night but that wasn't a good look! Lyfe's voice sounded great even with the inadequate sound system and he broke down each song, which he pins himself, just in case you've ever had trouble deciphering the lyrics which range from the hard truth of "Statistics" to the gospel tinged "It Could Have Been Worse" off of his soon to be released album "I Still Believe" on Warner Brother Records.
"W.ants W.orld W.omen" is the new album from the Motor City's, Dwele (full name Andwele Gardner). What can I say except this is another strong piece of art by the crafty artist. I just discovered that their are two versions of the CD; the iTunes version has one bonus song "Motivate" and the Best Buy version has three additional songs "She's A Star", "Kissing Game" and "You Don't Love Me" and then there is my version that doesn't have any of those songs. This is a great selling tool and it will be interesting to see if this strategy works for record sales.
There are a few surprise guest artists appearing like David Banner, Raheem DeVaughn, Slum Village and a blast from the past DJ Quik! My joint is track #2 "I Wish", it has a low super funky bass, a clanky keyboard, words that mean something and a groove that pierces through you. Other great songs are the current single "What's Not To Love" and check out a song called "My People" which features a roomy track (just a little percussion, keys and light horns) with more meaningful lyrics. This ones a winner and I don't think you'll be mad if you download it to your laptop!
Finally I'd like to thank a few people who have inspired me to write about the things I know. My Big Brother of the Blog mentor GARY HARRIS, his blogs are phenomenal! XINA EILAND who is taking Social Media to the next level! And finally PAUL PORTER one of the most knowledgeable music minds around who just by a few encouraging words help me write one more time! THANK YOU ALL...KNOWWAXhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13486869725435140806noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5935951470357628023.post-36690068048727026412010-08-14T15:54:00.000-04:002010-08-14T15:54:07.935-04:00THE 1st OF WHAT SHOULD BE MANY MORE!

I'd like to introduce myself and what this blog is all about. There is one thing that I know and that's entertainment RESTAURANTS, SPORTS (although I'm a loyal NY Knicks fan so that's in question) and most of all MUSIC! I'm in a constant hunt for those entertainment vehicles with the right vibe! I am building this web-log (blog) to get you to tell you about the NEW the GOOD and the WASTE in entertainment with a warning! I am not an apple polisher and my nose isn't browner than the rest of my face, nor do I get joy in ripping products just for the sake of shock.

What I do need is your feedback. If you agree or not, let it be known. I am not starting this as a professional writer so don't rip me for my sentence structure or use of incorrect punctuation. Take from this my love of the leisure world and my years of exposure to entertainment.
Also, I'll be attending a LIVE performance featuring Lyfe Jennings and his new work and I will give you my thought on that as well. If I come across anything else in my quest for entertainment I will promise to feed it to you as well, giving you my honest opinion and I want your honest feedback. You'll get it like I like my Hennesy straight with just a little bit of ice (because I'm cool like that)!
If you like what I write, tell a friend. If you don't like what I have to say tell a friend too, maybe they'll have more in common with me than you think.KNOWWAXhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13486869725435140806noreply@blogger.com3
